- On the 10th and 11th of November we will be learning about the First World War coincinding with the History Week.

At the end of the year, children will sit the Key Stage 1 SATs which consist of formal assessments in maths, reading and writing. Over the course of the year we will be preparing children so they can achieve their full potential in the tests. We will also keep you posted with things you can do at home to support your child. The School Run website has some useful information about the tests.

What we are doing in class

Year 2 are not following the new curriculum for Maths and English as the SATS this year are still based on the previous curriculum. All planning for these subjects is based on the Primary Framework and can be accessed by clicking on the links below.

Literacy/ English

Children will look at a broad range of fiction and nonfiction topics to improve both their writing and reading skills. They will also discuss, debate and present work through drama to improve their speaking and listening skills.

Phonics – Is still an important part of the children’s learning as it helps them with both their reading and spelling. Spellings set each week will be based on a different sound.

Numeracy/ Maths

The Numeracy Framework consists of 6 blocks that cover all aspects of Mathematics including number, calculations, problem solving, shape, measures and data handling.

Times Tables – Children need to know their 2, 5 and 10 times table by the end of Year 2. Practice makes perfect so please support your children’s learning as much as possible. If your child is already confident with these times tables feel free to move on to the 3 and 4 times tables.

We will be following the new curriculum for Science. The topics we will cover over the course of the year are; Animals including humans, All living things and their habitats, Plants and Use of every day materials. There is great importance placed on working scientifically in the new curriculum so we will be carrying out lots of exciting experiments .

IPC – International Primary Curriculum

IPC topics are an exciting way of children developing understanding and skills in wide variety of ways. Children will look at aspects of History, Geography, Art, Technology and Society.

Music, PE and Computing

PE is taught on Mondays at 11am. Please ensure your child has the correct kit.

Computing is taught at 11am on Tuesdays.

Music is taught at 11:45am on Tuesdays.

They are all 45 minute sessions.

Trips are an important part of your child’s education offering them a wide range of learning experiences outside the classroom setting. Keep checking the page for upcoming trips!

Homework books are now on sale! Homework will be set every Friday and is due in on Wednesdays. Children will also receive reading books on Fridays that must be returned the following week so they can be changed.

Spellings are set on Friday and we will have a spelling test the following Friday. Please encourage children to practice their spellings every day.

Online homework – We will also set homework online. Children will be provided with logins to access the sites.
